WHERE TO EAT
Seoul
Korean food is said to be spicy with rice, vegetables, soup and
fish being their staple diet. The national dish is Kimchi which is
nothing but fermented vegetables. Seoul, in general, is not short
on restaurants and you can find places which serve Korean,
Japanese, Chinese and Middle Eastern food delicacies. You will
have a hard time in deciding in what to eat. For a good meal you
need shell out something around 5000 to 15000 Won.
TGI Friday’s
(American) at Daehangno is an American restaurant chain with 12
locations across Seoul. It is famous for Jack Daniel’s chicken and
steak. The atmosphere is a cheerful one with a good selection of
wines and beers.
Richemont Bakery
(bakery) in Hongkik offers European breakfast for 3500 Ringgits.
It also sells breads, chocolates and ice lollies.
Eunhasoo Dinner Buffet
(Korean, European) at Sejong Hotel in Myeong-Dong is a place where
you can have good Korean and European food. The varieties include
beef ribs, barbecue pork, oxtail soup, Kimchi pizza and others.
The surroundings are also nice.
Top Cloud Restaurant
and Bar (Korean, French, Fusion) in Jung-Gu is a real top class
eatery. Situated on top floor of the tower it offers a marvelous
view at night. The place is trifle expensive with a coffee coming
at 12000 Ringgits. There is live Jazz also. And don’t forget to
visit the bathroom at least once. Just go there and you will know
why.
Memories (German) at
Itaewon is an authentic German eatery running for the last 10
years. Solid soups, steaks and German beer are the hot favorites
here.
Agio (Italian) at
Hongik is a place for salads pastas and thin crusted pizzas.
Hoejeonchobap
(Japanese) at Gwanghwamun is well known for Japanese style raw
fish items. The food here is expensive as it is downtown area.
Taco (Mexican) is at
Itaewon is a favorite haunt among the foreigners for the burritos.
Ali Baba (Middle
Eastern) at Itaewon is known for Egyptian food. The portions are
small but the pitta bread is particularly delicious.
Noryangjin Fish Market
Restaurants are traditional style restaurants specializing in sea
foods. They serve raw fish, spicy soups with octopus, steamed
crabs, blue crabs etc. But it’s better to stay away from sannakji
which is live baby octopus.
The above-mentioned
are some of the best eateries in Seoul but there are hundreds more
which can serve reasonably good food.
Busan
B&C Bakery (downtown
Busan) is famous for pastries, cakes, espressos and light meals.
Angel Hotel Coffee
Shop (Seomyeon) offers a breakfast of rice and Kimchi or bacon and
eggs.
Myeongseong Chobap
(Downtown Busan) is a Japanese restaurant which offers Korean raw
fish set menu. It is located 100m north of the Tower Hotel with
‘Sushi’ written on the signboard.
Beomtae Sonjjajang (Seomyeon)
is a shady looking place that serves up some excellent food. The
spicy seafood soup and sweet-and-sour fried pork are brilliant to
say the least.
Gaemi Jip (Downtown
Busan) is specially known for its octopus stew, a fiery dish that
can make the customers sweat, so beverages should be kept handy.
Daegu
Gangsan Myeonok
(Central Daegu) is one of the oldest establishments that provide
decent food.
Seokryujip (Suseong-Gu)
is a happening place for goat and dog meat. It is situated right
behind the gas station.
Gwangju
Yeongmi (city center)
is one of the many duck restaurants situated along Hyundai
Department store. The food is good and mainly Korean though the
decorations are below par.
Yero (Chungjang
Shopping Precinct Area) is a homely restaurant and is famous for
side dishes and wraps.
Jeju-Si
Daebokseong (Chiseongno
Shopping Precinct) is famous for Japanese style sushi and sea
bream soup.
Bagdad Café (Sinsan
Park Area) is a restaurant that has more novelty and character
than all the restaurants put together. The curries, naan breads
and mango lassi are all good and this place is thronged by all.
E-Mart Food Court (Chiseongno
Shopping Precinct) on the 5th floor is a great place for sushi,
kebabs and spare ribs.
El Paso (Chiseongno
Shopping Precinct) offers authentic Mexican food with beers,
tequila and all.
I Want Pizza (SW
Jeju-Si) is a takeaway near the bus terminal where you get 13 inch
pizzas.
Jeil Hyangto Eumsik (Chiseongno
Shopping Precinct) is a seafood restaurant opposite E-Mart. The
prices and replicas of the food available inside are shown
outside.
